Accelerate the speed of change
Focus on what functions
In 1984 an experiment was carried out on two groups of persons who were learning how to bowl. Both teams received the same training. They were filmed while they were playing but the recordings were edited in very different ways for each of the groups.
The first group were given a video which only included the moments in which they played badly, when they made mistakes. This is the traditional process of detecting errors, analysing them and resolving them.
The second group were given a video of their best moments, their moments of success, with the object of emphasising “the best of what is” in order to do it “more and better”.
Both groups improved but the second group, the one based on their success improved at twice the speed of the first.
To learn from the best moments, from the moments of maximum performance, is one of the pillars of Appreciative Inquiry.
